The majority of birds have a diurnal lifestyle, meaning they are primarily active during the day. Specifically, the authors propose that selection has acted on epigenetic mechanisms to package the DNA in retinal cells in such a way that it acts as a light-channeling lens to enhance photoreception. In addition to confirming the important role of the visual and auditory systems, the study, which was overseen by Dr Bart Kempenaers and Dr Jakob Mueller, in collaboration with Dr Martina Carrete at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Spain, suggests the existence of an unusual adaptation not yet described in birds, shedding new light on the evolutionary history of this nighttime predator. In a recent article in Genome Biology and Evolution titled “Genomic evidence for sensorial adaptations to a nocturnal predatory lifestyle in owls,” Pamela Espíndola-Hernández, a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, and colleagues report the results of a genome-wide scan to uncover the genetic and selective mechanisms that underlie the owls’ particular adaptations ( Espíndola-Hernández et al. Owls have evolved several features that leave them well suited to this task, combining raptorial traits like acute vision and sharp talons with nocturnal adaptations such as enhanced hearing and night vision. Hunting prey in the dark comes with a number of challenges. As the only birds with a nocturnal, predatory lifestyle, owls occupy a unique niche in the avian realm.

The flag of Gran Colombia also served as models for the current flags of Ecuador and Venezuela. The flag of Colombia is modeled after the flag of Gran Colombia. The flag of Colombia represents its independence from Spain that was gained in 1810. The white of the flag is for the snow-covered Andes, and the red is for the blood spilled to achieve independence. The blue symbolizes the sky and the Pacific Ocean. The star of the flag may represent a guide to progress and honor. In Spanish, the Chilean flag is known as La Estrella Solitaria (The Lone Star). The red of the Bolivian flag represents the blood shed by the country’s brave soldiers. The nine stars represent the nine departments of Bolivia, which are basically the nine regions or states of Bolivia. The coat of arms contain nine small gold stars that border the design. The Bolivian flag’s coat of arms contain a naval design used by navy vessels on rivers and lakes. The other countries are Haiti, Afghanistan, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. The Bolivian flag is one of six flags that contains a depiction of its flag with the flag. In the center of the yellow stripe, the flag contains the Bolivian coat of arms. The flag has three horizontal stripes of red, yellow, and green. The national flag of Bolivia was originally adopted in 1851. It is claimed that the Sun of May is a representation of the Inca sun god, Inti. In the center of the white stripe there is an emblem known as the Sun of May, the golden sun. The colors of the flag are three horizontal stripes with light blue on the top and bottom. The design of the Argentine flag is not agreed upon by historians, however, popular belief attributes the colors of the flag to the sky, clouds, and sun. I mis-interpretted because when I imagine a driver, I don't see the final load, all I see is the transistor and pull-up, that to me IS the driver and so I took the parts of the driver itself as what switch and load referred to.īut anyway, thank you both for clearing it up. That kind of detail is never covered just the terms "switch" and "load". Like in this example, the SWITCH is the mosfet, where as I thought it meant the transistor, the load is the final load whereas I thought it meant the pullup resistor. ![]() but because I don't know the definition of "high side" or "low side" and/or mis-interpret it, I'm buggered because no where there is a real unambiguous definition. ![]() I can tell you on a physical quantum scale why a mosfet works, I understand doping etc. Everyone automatically assumes the beginner is going to understand every bit of jargon and terminology. This is the problem in this field for beginners. I'll stick to programming, it makes more sense. To be non-inductive (not wire-wound) and right next to the gates.įorget it, the terminology is too ambiguous and counter-intuitive for me. If you do add gate resistors because of paralleled devices, the resistor should Many common MOSFET drivers have an output resistance of a few ohms to a fewĭozen ohms and typically need no resistors if driving only a single MOSFET and EMI Switch-on, as a safeguard against shoot-through). (typically the diode conducts to discharge, causing a faster switch-off than You can add a resistor and a diode in order to make switching asymmetrical High frequency EMI from the switching circuit, its basically a compromiseīetween switching efficiency and EMI reduction. You can add a resistor to slow down switching time in order to reduce Resistors also have the role of allowingĭevices with different plateau voltages to switch in unison (plateau and threshold Same driver, because there is a differential oscillation mode in this configuration You normally have to add gate resistors if driving two or more MOSFETs from the Outputs enough current to switch your MOSFET as fast as you want. Gate resistors are not normally required when usingĪ MOSFET driver driving one MOSFET. Those resistors can also help prevent ringing or oscillation. So without current limiting somewhere (in the driver or external to it), the current can spike very high. ![]() More correctly stated, the Gate takes a large amount of charge. The resistors to the Gates of the MOSFETs are there to limit current, because the Gate of a MOSFET has a very high "capacitance". High side: On the "high" (upper) end of the load. I'm still however a little confused, now I understand the resistors are there to protect from these high currents, but again, wouldn't they mess up the driver's function? The gate would then have to charge and discharge through those resistors and introduce a delay making it no better than using the transistor circuit above? Also if the spiking current is high wouldn't those resistors burn out if they were regular 0.25W ones? Is the term is relative to the device it's driving? If I used the same circuit to drive an N-Channel would it then become an inverting high side? I still don't get why it's non-inverting though, as the logic is being reversed by the transistor. So High Side would be clearer to understand if they said the LOAD is on the High Side rather than the SWITCH being on the high side as the switch by definition is actually on BOTH, the load can only be on one. It's one thing to understand circuits and another to know the terminology.I guess, it seems very counter-intuitive to me. I thought low-side meant the switch (Q2) was on the low (ground) side of the load and inverted because the gate of the mosfet is at an inverted logic to the base of the transistor. I do understand how the circuit works, I'm just not up on the jargon. ![]() No winning ticket matching all seven numbers was sold in Canada so there is no winner of the 24 million jackpot. Platypus are found only in mainland Australia and the southern island of Tasmania. The tail has no fine fur, only coarse, bristly hair on its upper surface to aid in carrying or sweeping. Female platypus use the tail to carry leaves to the nesting chamber, and both sexes use it to sweep loosened soil out of the way when digging. The tail can store up to fifty percent of a platypus's total load of body fat. The platypus's flat, beaverlike tail is used as a swimming rudder, a shovel, for fat storage, and by the mother for keeping eggs and young warm. Females bear smaller, useless spurs, without venom, that they shed by ten months of age. At four months of age, male spurs are protected by a covering of whitish, chalky material that sloughs off completely by the end of the first year of age. The glands secrete venom that is passed through ducts to the sharp spurs, which the platypus can erect like jacknife blades and stab into other animals.īoth sexes have the spurs when they are young. ![]() There are venom glands, one in each thigh, called the "crural glands" because they are controlled by the crural nerves, which are major motor nerves of the hindlimbs. Out of water, the senses of sight and hearing are sharp.īoth hind limbs of the male bear hollow, pointed, poison spurs mounted on the insides of the ankles, just above the heels. These grooves are closed underwater, shutting both eyes and ears, when the platypus dives to hunt for food. There are two long grooves for protecting the eyes and ears, a single groove surrounding both the eye and ear on each side. The eyes are small and the external ears are mere holes in the skull, although the internal structure of the ears is like that of other mammals. The platypus uses the forelimbs and forefeet for swimming and digging, while using the hind feet and claws as combs to keep the fur clean and waterproof. Back on land or in its burrow, the animal folds the extra webbing under its forefeet and walks on its knuckles. Although an excellent swimmer, the platypus is clumsy when trying to walk on land, and seldom does so anyway, except within its tunnels, since it burns up twice as much body energy moving about on land as it does swimming underwater.Īll four feet have five claws apiece and are webbed, but the webbing of the front feet extends in a flat flange beyond the toes when the platypus swims. As in other monotremes, the limbs of the platypus are set in a permanent push-up position, the upper limb bones extending out from the sides of the body, horizontal to the ground, the lower limb bones going straight down. The body is somewhat flattened and streamlined. As the platypus dives, the two fur layers trap a layer of air next to the skin, thus keeping the body dry and helping to insulate it against cold while the platypus swims, often throughout the night, and sometimes in temperatures close to freezing. The fur has two layers, an undercoat with a woolly texture and an overcoat of coarser hair. Platypus fur is fine, soft, and dense, with up to 900 hairs per square inch of skin. The pelt color varies from dark amber to very dark brown on the platypus's back and sides, and from grayish white to yellowish brown on the underbelly. Most of the body is covered with fine, soft fur. The scientific name, Ornithorhynchus anatinus, means, in Latin, "bird-snout, resembling a duck." The plural is "platypuses" or just "platypus." The word "platypus" means "flat feet," referring to the animal's webbed, somewhat ducklike feet. The nostrils are set close together on the top of the upper bill. The bill has an upper and lower section, like that of a mammal or bird, and the jaw hinging and motions are like those of mammals. The snout, despite its duckbill shape, is soft, moist, and rubbery in texture, not hard like a bird's beak. An adult platypus, about the size of a house cat, weighs from 3 to 5 pounds (1.5 to 2.5 kilograms), its adult head and body length runs 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 centimeters), and the tail adds another 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters). DUCK-BILLED PLATYPUS: Ornithorhynchidae PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICSĪ platypus, at first glance, resembles an otter with a duck's bill on its face and a beaver's tail in back. ![]() Of those 15 birds, only 4 made it to their final destination in the United States, but those 4 birds were the foundation of the American Pekin duck. Pekin ducks will gladly forage for snacks, but love being provided fresh leafy greens, bugs, peas, and corn. Adult Pekin ducks after week 10 can be transitioned to a standard chicken layer feed. Pekin duckling should be fed a duck-specific starter feed with a minimum of 18% protein. Pekin ducks that are upset by something in the middle of the night will emit a loud calling quack which can be disruptive in urban neighborhood settings. Male Pekin drakes produce a raspy, quiet quack, but female Pekin ducks have a loud, piercing, noisy ‘call’ quack that they emit when alarmed or just randomly. The most common problem poultry enthusiasts have with this duck is its noise. ![]() Although they are large, they don’t tend to experience mobility issues very frequently. They can experience other health issues common among ducks, like nasal infections and parasitic infections. They don’t seem to have any major health problems specific to their breed. They have been bred to be large, hardy, healthy birds. Some variation of the Pekin duck has been around for more than 2,000 years. So if you have 10 ducks, expect to need a 10×15 foot pen for them. Your duck pen, or run, should provide about 15 square feet of space per duck. Your duck house should provide 3 to 5 square feet of space per duck. Your duck house should provide adequate shelter and security from predators and be warm and dry. Duck houses do not need roosting bars, as ducks don’t roost the way chickens do. Your duck house can be of a similar design to a chicken coop. Like all poultry you would keep at home, ducks need shelter. ![]() Type in unit symbols, abbreviations, or full names for units of length, area, mass, pressure, and other types.
